Twelve years on stage teaching others that the steadiest communicators don't just survive hard rooms. They prevent them.

about joyce
Hi, I'm Joyce McHugh, LCSW. I have spent twenty years working as a professional guardian and licensed clinical social worker in some of the most emotionally charged situations you can imagine. Broken systems, volatile families, life and death decisions, and rooms where everyone was certain they were right.
What I learned in those rooms is that the struggle to stay steady and lead is real and hard. The people in those rooms don't need a program. They need to feel understood, supported, and equipped to find that steadiness inside themselves. That is what I have spent twelve years teaching.
I work with guardians, social workers, nurses, managers, educators, and anyone whose job requires them to speak clearly when everything around them is anything but.
If you've ever walked out of a hard conversation thinking "I handled that badly," you're exactly who I'm talking to.
Speaking
Not every speaker has done the work.
I have. I am a licensed clinical social worker and active professional guardian. I don't observe high conflict situations from a distance. I sit in them now, make decisions inside them, and teach what actually holds up when the pressure is real and the stakes are high.
You will leave inspired. You will also leave with something to use tomorrow. This is practical, trauma-informed communication training that meets you where you are and gives you tools that actually hold."
KEynote topics
-
When the room is volatile and the pressure is high, the words you choose either escalate the situation or steady it. This session gives professionals practical, tested language for setting boundaries that hold without creating more conflict. You’ll leave with scripts you can use the next day.
-
The professionals who show up for people in crisis are not immune to the effects of that work. This session explores what happens in your body when you’re in a high-stakes situation, why smart people come apart under pressure, and what you can do about it. Grounded in trauma-informed practice and twenty years of experience in the field.
-
Burnout doesn’t always come from the work itself. It often comes from feeling unseen, undervalued, or constantly in conflict with the people you work alongside. This session addresses the communication patterns that damage professional culture and offers concrete tools for building something better.
